Benston wins historic sheriff's race in Bladen

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - With all precincts reporting, Prentis Benston appears to be the unofficial winner of the Democratic nomination for Bladen County Sheriff.

Benston won by 292 votes over challenger Eric Bryan.  The unofficial vote totals have Benston with 3872 to 3580 for Bryan.

With no opposition right now, Benston is on target to be the next sheriff of the county.  Bill Ward of Clarkton is attempting to get on the ballot as an Independent candidate.  He has until Friday to get signatures of 4% of registered voters.

Bryan won the Democratic primary by about 200 votes over Benston, but without a solid majority the race went to a runoff election.

Benston will become the first African-American sheriff in Bladen County history should the ballot remain unchanged.  He would replace the retiring Sheriff Steve Bunn.
