WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Better wages and better benefits - that's what an area union is advocating for some crew members of a ship docked in Wilmington.
Members of the Seafarers International Union hosted an informational picket Saturday.
They want to show their support to the crew members of the "MV Baffin Strait."
They hope this will encourage the crew to organize and go union.
The Assistant Vice President of the Union, Bryan Powell, says membership with the union will greatly improve working conditions.
"Their wages are substandard. They don't get any overtime. They are basically on salary, so they can work them 16 hours a day and get the same low rates of pay, which we think is ridiculous," says Powell.
Powell says if they can get enough people to sign, they can then take their case to the Department of Labor.
