NEW HANOVER CO., NC (WECT) - New Hanover County Commissioners will start their first meeting in 2010 by having a public hearing on the Alcohol Beverage Commission administrator's salary.

Commissioner Jason Thompson says he's been notified by attorneys for the ABC Board that if commissioners take certain actions, the board may file a lawsuit.

Earlier this month, many people were upset with the fact that ABC Board Administrator Billy Williams made than $230,000 a year. His son, Bradley, makes $115,000 a year.

County leaders are in the process of discussing the salaries and have indicated, in order to get to the bottom of the issue, they could file a lawsuit.

Now members of the ABC Board are considering taking legal action of their own.

"Well I think it's ridiculous," said Commissioner Thompson. "Number one, volunteers will waste taxpayers dollars to hire attorneys to keep a volunteer position. That's my personal opinion. I don't know if it's going to come to that, because we don't know what kind of action we're going to take yet. We're going to hear their side of it and the citizens' side too and come to some kind of resolution."

County commissioners will have a public hearing on January 4 where they'll hear from members of the ABC Board and concerned citizens.
