The 75th N.C. Azalea Festival kicks off with Queen’s Coronation Celebration Concert
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The 2022 North Carolina Azalea Festival will make a return to normal this week for its 75th anniversary.
This follows several years of pandemic disruptions.
Things really kick off Wednesday evening with the Queen’s Coronation Celebration Concert at Live Oak Bank Pavilion. Pavilion gates open at 5:00 p.m. and the queen’s coronation will start at 7:00 p.m. Following the coronation, there will be performances from well-known radio host “Bigg B” and East Coast Community Choir, as well as music group Girl Named Tom. The band won NBC’s “The Voice” back in December of 2021. Tickets for the event are $5 for lawn seating and $10 for reserved seating.
Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin will be crowned as this year’s Queen Azalea. The composer, singer and actress got her master’s in music composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem.
The 75th Azalea Festival continues into the weekend, of course, with a number of events.
Brantley Gilbert will perform Thursday at 7 p.m. and REO Speedwagon will take the stage on Friday at 7 p.m. The Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour starts on Friday and runs through Sunday. The 75th Street Fair will be April 8-10 at the Cape Fear Community College Schwartz Center Parking Lot and the Dollar General Parade will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Cypress Hill will perform Saturday night at 7p.m.
