Seahawks return home to an enthusiastic welcome from excited fans
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - After winning in a double-overtime thriller, the UNCW Men’s Basketball team received a warm welcome from Seahawk fans as they brought home the 2022 Roman College Basketball Invitational tournament trophy.
The team is fresh off a historic season marked by the school’s longest winning streak that culminated in a CBI tournament championship win Wednesday night. And today, they brought the hardware back to Trask Coliseum.
After falling just short of an NCAA tournament appearance last week, the team headed down to Florida for the College basketball invitational.
There, the Seahawks won four straight games in four days, taking home the trophy after cruising to victory against middle Tennessee State. Back in Wilmington, the team was ready to show off the trophy to the home crowd.
In just his second year at the helm, Coach Takayo Siddle was named conference coach of the year.
“We were able to really buy into our process and that’s doing everything in front of us, in that particular day, well,” said Siddle. “And everybody bought into it and we got better day by day and game by game and as a coach that’s all you can really ask for.”
Siddle says he expects the future to be bright for UNC Wilmington and his message for the crowd this afternoon: UNCW’s basketball is back. Right now, he said they’ll take some time before getting back to work in the off-season and getting ready for next year’s tipoff.
