BLADEN COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - A man struck another man in the face with a handgun before firing multiple shots into the air Monday in Tar Heel, according to the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say that law enforcement responded to the U Stop gas station across from the Dollar General store shortly before noon.

“An unknown male had assaulted another male with a handgun by striking him in the face with the weapon. Several shots were fired in the air as the victim ran away,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The suspect then reportedly ran into a nearby wooded area.

“The victim of the shooting was interviewed by law enforcement officers and told officers that he did not want to pursue charges against the people that assaulted him,” the news release states. “The victim could not provide the name of the suspect or suspects that assaulted him. After an attempt to locate the suspect in the wooded area with no success, officers learned that the suspect had possibly been picked up by a vehicle.”
