Wave Transit commits to health and safety program

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - To reassure passengers that safety measures are in place, Wave Transit announced Tuesday it has joined the American Public Transportation Association (APTA)’s Health and Safety Commitments Program.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wave implemented protective measures to ensure the safety of customers and employees; however, in response to feedback from passengers across the nation, the APTA developed the new program.

In order to earn the confidence of customers, the APTA identified four key areas that needed to be addressed:

1. Following public health guidelines from official sources

2. Cleaning and disinfecting transit vehicles frequently and requiring face coverings and other protections

3. Keeping passengers informed and empowered to choose the safest times and routes to ride

4. Putting health first by requiring riders and employees to avoid public transit if they have been exposed to COVID-19 or feel ill

Commitment to the program demonstrates shared responsibility from both customers and the public transportation system to follow established guidelines.

“Being a participant of APTA’s Health and Safety Commitments Program is just one way we are championing this commitment. A strategic plan has long been established for Wave Transit, including sanitizing and disinfecting processes, driver barrier protections, and mandatory mask adoption. We will continue to reassess and revise our plan as needed, utilizing CDC recommendations and the Governor’s orders as its guiding framework. Wave is dedicated to staying actively engaged to adapt quickly as changes occur to uphold our pledge,” stated Wave Transit’s new Executive Director Marie Parker. “Unquestionably, our number one priority is to provide our employees with a safe and healthy workplace, while providing our customers with a safe ride to their destination.”
