DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - An employee of a Duplin County chicken processing plant is dead and the sheriff says they have identified a potential suspect in the shooting.

Sheriff Blake Wallace tells WITN News that deputies were called around 5:15 a.m. to the House of Raeford plant on U.S. 117, north of Rose Hill.

The man was shot multiple times in the parking lot and died on the way to the hospital, according to the sheriff. Wallace said the victim, whose name they haven’t released, lived outside of Duplin County.

The sheriff said the potential suspect appears to have no association with the plant and there was a past history between the victim and the gunman. Wallace said it was not a random shooting.

No other workers were in harm’s way, the sheriff said, and they are still speaking to people who were in the area trying to locate potential witnesses.
