WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Cape Fear Academy and Topsail High School hosted signing day events on Thursday.
At Cape Fear Academy, Devon Cavanaugh signed to play women’s lacrosse at the University of Pittsburgh and Liza Murtagh will swim at Boston College.
The COVID-19 pandemic made the process more difficult for both student-athletes.
“Thankfully, I was committed before the coronavirus happened and cut short our season,” said Cavanaugh. “It was difficult, but I’ve been trying to get recruited my whole high school career.”
“When coronavirus hit it was definitely harder because you don’t get to go on official visits,” added Murtagh. “But honestly, I thought it was kind of better because I had more communications from coaches.”
At Topsail High School, Tyesha Williams signed to play softball at Boston University.
Because of COVID-19 Williams didn’t have a junior season but hopes to be able to play this spring. She says being able to play softball in college has been a lifelong dream.
“It’s super exciting; it came quicker than I expected,” said Williams. “It’s super exciting to go on to the next level and show off my skills. I hope to make an impact on the college softball world.”
