WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - An outdoor musical review gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy live performances again.
The Piano Men, starring Nygel D. Robinson and Brian Whitted, will feature music from Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Sir Elton John, John Legend and more.
Whitted was one of the musical directors and pianists for Chicago on Broadway and the national tours. He has played and worked with a host of artists including Bette Midler. Wilmington audiences last saw his work in Opera House Theatre Company’s production of La Cage aux Follies.
Robinson is a singer/songwriter, who plays five instruments. He lives in New York but has roots in North Carolina. He has worked in professional theatre, New York original theatre workshops and is co- writing an original musical.
The two join forces for The Piano Men, which Whitted said has something for everyone.
“It’s going to be so much fun," he said. “If you love anybody who has ever played the piano and sang, we’re probably going to sing one of their songs.”
The performances, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13 and 14, will be held outside on the Thalian Hall Portico.
Whitted said it is exciting to perform outdoors because anything can happen.
“It is very distracting to perform outdoors because birds and everything just start singing at you!” he said. “Everything happens when you’re outside, things fly in your mouth; anything that can happen happens but you just have to focus and do what you got to do.”
Ray Kennedy is the show’s director. Barbara Mootoo, Beth Crookham and Michelle Braxton are guest starring in the performances.
