New permanent sign installed at Long Leaf Park

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Back in July, County Commissioners voted to change the name of Hugh MacRae Park in Wilmington to Long Leaf Park.

Hugh MacRae was a white supremacist who was involved in the 1898 Wilmington massacre when an unspecified number of black people were killed by white men in an effort to take over the city.

The push to change the name came amid calls to take down confederate statues over the summer.
