WPD: Man in stable condition after Hillcrest shooting

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A man is expected to survive after he was shot in the Hillcrest housing community Tuesday evening, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

A spokeswoman for the police department said officers responded around 8:10 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting in the area of 1402 Meares Street.

The 44-year-old male was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. As of Wednesday morning, he was listed in stable condition.

The spokeswoman said a second person who suffered minor injuries in the shooting was taken into custody but later released.

Detectives are investigating whether the shooting was an act of self-defense.
