‘Our State’ highlights some of NC’s best hiking spots in the May issue of the magazine

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - May’s edition of Our State will make readers want to get outside.

While gyms remain close in Phase 1 of Governor Roy Cooper’s phased plan to reopen the state in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the issue highlights another option for exercise: hiking.

This month, the magazine looks at some of the best places to hike from the mountains to the sea.

“Getting outdoors when you are able to social distance, to be away from people at a safe distance, is a really good thing and getting out into nature really has been great," said Jeremy Markovich, from Our State. “This issue is coming along really at a great time because it’s not only about the actual act of hiking but it is about the people who actually create the trails and help make these little towns along the trails. They’re really great places to go to and they give the trail more than just nature, they give a lot of character. So, we try to focus on a lot of that but also we suggest some places if they’re near you and you can get out then check them out."

This issue ties in with this season of the magazine’s podcast: Away Message. The podcast follows some of the hikers who completed the Mountain to Sea Trail in North Carolina.
