COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Crews in Columbus County found the body Monday morning of a boater who had last been seen Friday, Jan. 24.
Family members said Charles B. Williamson, 40, of Chadbourn, left to go on a boating/fishing trip to the Lumber River Friday and never came home.
The Columbus County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation and extensive search to find Williamson. His boat was located overturned in the Lumber River near the South Carolina state line Sunday night.
His body was found Monday morning in the Lumber River, on the state line.
Authorities do not suspect foul play.
Sheriff Jody Greene provided the following safety tips to use while boating / fishing on the river:
- Make sure you wear the right sized US Coast Guard approved life jacket.
- Make sure your boat is equipped with the proper safety equipment.
- Be weather wise.
- Make sure you tell a loved one the specifics of your trip. Tell them where you are launching your boat, where you are boating to, and when you plan on returning. This will ensure that if you miss your arrival time, your loved one will know to seek assistance immediately.
