Shelters opening ahead of Hurricane Dorian’s arrival
Shelter information for our area:
Codington Elementary and the Blair Elementary School located on Blair School Dr. (known this school year as Wrightsville Beach at Blair Elementary) will serve as shelters in New Hanover County. Blair Elementary is a pet-friendly shelter.
County officials also opened Eaton Elementary Wednesday.
Codington Elementary and Blair Elementary are both at capacity, as of 12:25 p.m. Thursday, according to county officials. Elementary has space for 115 residents, officials say.
Bladen Lakes Primary School, East Arcadia School, East Bladen High School (pet friendly), and West Bladen High School (special needs) will serve as shelters and will open at 8:00 a.m. Thursday. BARTS will be available for transportation to the shelters. Residents are encouraged to call BARTS Director Kent Porter at 910-322-8028 to arrange transportation to the shelter

North Brunswick High School, South Brunswick High School and West Brunswick High School opened as shelters at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4. All three shelters are pet friendly.
The following shelters opened at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4th:
- Edgewood Elementary School - located at 317 East Calhoun Street in Whiteville. This shelter will be the only shelter that allows pets.
- East Columbus High School - located at 32 Gator Lane in Lake Waccamaw.
- South Columbus High School - located at 40 Stallion Drive in Tabor City.
- West Columbus High School - located at 7294 Andrew Jackson Highway SW in Cerro Gordo.
- Guideway Elementary School - located at 11570 Swamp Fox E. in Tabor City.
If anyone with special needs will require transportation to get to a shelter, please call 910-642-7201 to make these arrangements. Transportation will not be available once tropical storm winds (35 mph.) arrive.
Malpass Corner Elementary, Topsail Elementary School, and Cape Fear Middle School will serve as shelters in Pender County.
All three will open at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Cape Fear Middle School will serve those with special needs and is a pet-friendly shelter. Pet owners are required to present rabies vaccination records. Residents need to bring pet food and water, and pet carriers.
A suggested list of items to bring to the shelter include:
- Clothing for 3-7 days
- Pillows
- Blankets or sleeping bags, cots or air mattress
- Food and medication for service animal
- Daily toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, soap, washcloth, feminine hygiene products)
- Special dietary foods, infant formula
- Identification for each family member
- 7-day supply of medicine in the original bottles if possible
- Cell phone with charger
- Books, games and cards
- Family/friend/caretaker’s emergency contact information
- Written list of all medications with doctors’ names and phone numbers
- Glasses, dentures, hearing aids
- Medical equipment used on a daily- basis (wheelchair, walker, cane, oxygen, catheters, etc.)
- Extra batteries needed for any medical equipment
- Adult diapers or children’s diapers and wipes.
- Food and snacks for 3-7 days.
