WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Fourth of July is meant for family, fireworks and celebrating the United States. But, for a pair of dog owners, it didn’t end up like most parties.
Brian Durham and John Ditmeyer’s 5-year-old English Bulldog, Rocky, escaped its fenced-in area and wound up in a neighbor’s yard. From then, the two roommates say their neighbor “provoked” Rocky with the intention of killing him.
“He went into the Chevy Blazer, retrieved a knife, he stabbed the dog once in the side, he stabbed the dog a second time in the heart," Durham said. "As my roommate was attempting to pick the dog up, the dog literally died in the staircase of the man’s house as he went into his door, locked the door and shut the light off.”
Durham says he woke up that night to “terrifying screams” from his friend indicating the dog was dead.
The roommates filed charges Wednesday with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
“We don’t want any money, we don’t want anything from anybody," said Durham. "All we want is justice for this dog because this dog did not deserve to die the way that it did.”
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the allegations. No arrests have been made.
