Crews respond to overnight fire in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Crews from multiple agencies were called to a house fire in New Hanover County just after midnight Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Frank Meyer with New Hanover County Fire Rescue said crews were dispatched to structure fire at 821 Santa Maria Avenue in the Porters Neck area at 12:01 a.m.

Callers reported a fire in the upper level of the two-story home.

Fortunately, the home was equipped with smoke alarms which alerted the occupants in time for them to safely escape.

Meyer said lack of fire hydrants hampered efforts to extinguish the fire. Crews had to haul water from the nearest fire hydrant on Edgewater Club Road to the house.

No civilians were injured, however, one firefighter was taken to the hospital due to injuries sustained while fighting the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the New Hanover County Fire Marshal’s Office, Meyer said.

The Wilmington Fire Department and Pender County EMS & Fire assisted in the call.
