SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - The North Carolina Coastal Federation is reaching out to volunteers to help plant native grasses behind a newly constructed reef at Sunset Beach Waterfront Park.

The hope is to create a natural shoreline that prevents erosion long term by reinforcing the oyster reef with marsh grasses. In addition to protecting the shore, the grasses create a habitat for wildlife and prevent pollutants from getting into the waterway.

The event will be held on May 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sunset Beach Town Park. Volunteers should wear clothes that can get wet and dirty and are required to wear closed toe shoes. Snacks, water, sunscreen and bug spray will be provided. Boots and gloves will also be available. This event is most suited for adults and children over the age of 12.
