WPD looking for man accused of using counterfeit bills

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man it says is connected to a counterfeit case.

According to the WPD, fake $50 bills were used at Hanover Shopping Center.

“If you’re accepting large cash bills, make sure to check they’re real,” the WPD stated in a Facebook post. “These counterfeit bills will pass an ink test, but not a watermark test.”

Great Outdoor Provision Co. store manager Pete Peleuses was not there at the time of the incident but when he found out about it he checked with neighboring stores if the suspect bought from them too.

“The next morning during opening I went up and down the strip and asked a number of the managers for the different stores around here if they had the same experience and indeed they had,” said Peleuses.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the WPD at 910-343-3609 or use Text A Tip.
