Basketball standout leaving Laney High School

Rivers leaving Laney

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Laney High School all-state basketball player Saniya Rivers will play her junior season at another school in New Hanover County.

Sources confirm Rivers applied to attend Ashley High School during New Hanover County Schools' open enrollment period, and has been accepted.

As a sophomore at Laney, Rivers averaged 24.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 4.1 assists a game, and was named he 2018-2019 Gatorade North Carolina Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Laney finished 28-2, and advanced to the third round of the 4A NCHSAA playoffs.

ESPN has ranked Rivers as its’ 4th ranked recruit in the Class of 2021, and is expected to be one of the most sought-after players in the country.
