RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) - Saint Augustine’s University, senior basketball standout Tyre Gathright was named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Ashley High School graduate took care of business on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
The 6-foot-4 guard ranked third in the CIAA in scoring (20.9) and was selected to the All-CIAA team for the second straight season as a senior.
Gathright posted a 3.13 cumulative grade point average, with a business administration degree.
Gathright made time to help others as he and his teammates assisted the Helping Hand Mission in Raleigh, N.C., with its Thanksgiving Food Drives. He also coached elementary and middle school kids at the J.D. Lewis Multipurpose Center in Raleigh, N.C., and mentored elementary school children in the Wake County Schools’ Helping Hand program.
The candidates for the CIAA Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year were nominated by the league’s sports information directors and voted on by the athletic directors, senior woman administrators, sports information directors and faculty athletics representatives of each CIAA institution. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and attended the institution for at least one year.
