Burgaw wind damage work of microburst, not tornado

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Meteorologists with the National Weather Service determined a microburst - or strong, focused, straight-line winds - damaged portions of Burgaw during a severe thunderstorm Sunday afternoon.

In analyzing snapped limbs, bent power lines, and even large 420-pound sections of pipe that had been displaced, survey crews noted the microburst’s top winds were likely as high as 75 mph. That’s the same magnitude as an EF-0 tornado or Category 1 hurricane.

The National Weather Service had issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Pender County several minutes before the nasty microburst.
