Police looking for hit-and-run suspect who told victim he “had to leave”

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department is looking for a man connected to a hit and run on Carolina Beach Road earlier this month.

According to the WPD, warrants have been obtained for Deaundre Antez Newkirk, 29, for an incident that took place May 1 near the intersection of Carolina Beach Road and Shipyard Blvd.

The victim told police that at approximately 4:30 p.m. she was stopped at a red light when a large, white box truck rear-ended her.

The victim told police that after both drivers exited their vehicles, Newkirk said he would pay for the damages but he had to leave. He told the victim he would return to the scene. He allegedly provided a nickname and a phone number, which the victim said she attempted to call multiple times.

Police say the victim suffered minor injuries and sustained about $500 damage to the car.
