CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Carolina Beach restaurant Soul Flavor held a fundraiser Saturday for Riley Howell, one of the victims in the UNC Charlotte shooting.

Police said Howell jumped on the gunman, giving his life to save others. Soul Flavor’s owner, Mimi Mowery, said she reached out to the family after the shooting, and wanted to help them any way she could. Mowery said she also wanted to raise awareness about gun violence.

“We just want people to talk about this. This is a national crisis. Something has to change," she said.

“It’s not a matter of arming teachers, or having active shooter drills in elementary school. It’s about this nation coming together and putting an end to gun violence,” Mowery said.

All restaurant proceeds Saturday will be donated to the Howell family.
