KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - More than 50 female scientists took part in presentations and activities for Women in Science Day at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Saturday.
Fields from meteorology, to shark research took center stage to the days events, free with general admission to the aquarium.
“It’s a perfect opportunity for little girls who want to get into the sciences, who have interest in that to see role models actually that look like themselves doing it," Gail Lemiec, an educator at the aquarium, said.
Scientists at the event said women have historically been underrepresented to the public, despite making significant discoveries and contributions for centuries.
This is the first time the event was held, but organizers said they hope to hold it again next year.
