TRAFFIC ALERT: South 16th Street closed after tractor-trailer takes down power lines
A section South 16th Street was shut down Tuesday afternoon after a tractor-trailer became entangled in power lines and broke a power pole.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The intersection of South 16th and Marstellar streets in Wilmington is expected to reopen Tuesday evening after a tractor-trailer broke a power pole and knocked down power lines.

According to officials with the Wilmington Fire Department, the truck became tangled in the lines and broke a power pole shortly before 1:20 p.m. After the accident, power lines were down on 16th Street, blocking traffic at the intersection with Marstellar Street.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was removed from the vehicle and is being checked out by EMS personnel.

City officials said South 16th Street is closed at Dawson Street and drivers should seek an alternate route. A CSX rail line is also closed at the intersection while crews conduct repair work.

A Duke Energy worker at the scene expects the roadway to reopen around 6 p.m.
