BOLIVA, NC (WECT) - The Brunswick County Schools Board of Education voted to approve a contract to install artificial turf at North, South, and West Brunswick High Schools.
The board voted 4-0 to approve the contract with AstroTurf Corporation.
The school district had originally awarded the contract to ProForm Athletics, but rescinded it when they discovered the company didn’t have the required North Carolina Contractors license to perform the work.
The total cost of the project is $2,998,640 and will come out of the capital project fund. The money in that account can only be used on infrastructure for the school system.
Brunswick County Schools decided to pursue the option of artificial turf after the cost of maintaining the natural fields became too much.
"To make the grass playable, we had to limit the amount of teams and traffic on the fields which isn't fair,” said Brunswick County Schools Chief Operations Officer Sue Rutledge. “Football is always on it, but it wasn't fair to the women's programs and other smaller sports. Our stadiums are nice, but we couldn't keep the grass growing."
The final step is for the county to get stormwater permits. Work is expected to begin in mid-May and finish by the second week of August.
