WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The Association of Paddlesurf Professionals made its way to Wrightsville Beach this weekend.
Competitors from around the country showcased their talents as part of the world tour.
Series of heats ran throughout the weekend in both the men’s and women’s professional and amateur championships.
Haywood Newkirk, a participant as well as an event organizer, has made a name for himself in both the community and the paddle surfing world.
According to Newkirk and many other athletes, paddle surfing is not only a sport, it also acts as a calming therapy session.
“You can solve your problems. You can think about your family. You can think about your kids," Newkirk said.
"The ocean is a great place to come out here with your own thoughts and sooth your mind and enjoy nature, enjoy life”
The next Paddlesurf competition is April 24-28 in Carolina Beach.
