OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) - Sgt. 1st Class Justin Goff of the United States Army, 29, died in a skydiving accident at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport Sunday morning, according to Sgt. Loyd Hames with the Oak Island Police Department.

Hames said Goff was on a recreational skydiving trip, and called it “a freak accident.” Goff’s parachute did deploy, but blamed high winds for the accident. Goff did not hit anything on the way down, according to Hames.

Goff was pronounced dead at the scene.

Goff was from Florida and stationed in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Omega Gymnastics in Fayettville posted pictures of Goff and his family on its Facebook page Sunday night. The post stated he the recreational and boys coach there, and father to one of their competitive team athletes and a pre-team athlete. The post said he had three kids and a wife.

“Coach Justin will be greatly missed by many of our gymnasts and tumblers,” the post read in part.

Hames said an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
