CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Neighbors in one town are coming together to support a family after a fatal crash.
In March, Cora Kruger, one-year-old, and her grandmother, Catherine Hagelstein, 56, were hit by a Jeep while walking across a marked crosswalk at the intersection of South Lake Park Boulevard and Cape Fear Boulevard in Carolina Beach. Police charged the driver, Heather Ligotino, with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield to a pedestrian.
Cora died and Hagelstien is recovering from her injuries.
Today, Mayor Joe Benson and the town of Carolina Beach are throwing a fundraiser for the Hagelstein family.
“It means so much to me. I cant put it into words its just so appreciative," said Cathy. "Its a long road to recovery and to know that people are behind me.. there’s no words to express how my gratitude is.”
