NEW YORK (WPIX/TRIBUNE/CNN) - Police say a construction worker was trying to warn two men not to cut through a construction site for their own safety before he became the victim of a hate crime.
Two men are accused of punching and kicking the 48-year-old construction worker around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Police say the worker asked them to leave and the men called him an n-word.
According to court documents one man said, ‘We're out here partying and you're out here working like a n----r.’ The men allegedly said, “What are you going to do about it, n----r?"
That's when police say 25-year-old Klevis Vulaj tackled the worker to the ground and began punching him in the head and body and 23-year-old Veton Balidemaj, began kicking the man.
Police arrived and arrested the two suspects while the construction worker was taken to the hospital.
The construction worker had several lacerations and suffered a fractured orbital bone, reports say.
The pair was charged with assault as a hate crime.
