WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Nir Family YMCA on Market Street will open a new playground next week that should help children exercise their bodies and minds.

An unveiling ceremony for the Imagination Playground at 2710 Market Street is scheduled for Jan. 16 at 9:30 a.m. An open play session at the playground will follow. The event is free and open to the public with children 1 year and older and their caregivers invited to unwrap the equipment and play with it.

Imagination Playground was designed by architect David Rockwell and features oversized blue foam pieces that allow children to build play structures of their own. The playground encourages child-directed, unstructured free play and helps develop healthy bodies and creative minds.

"We're very excited that the Nir Family YMCA will be able to provide this unique play experience to the children enrolled in our programs and to the Greater Wilmington community,” said Sarah Gibbs, development director for the YMCA.

This is the 43rd Imagination Playground donated in conjunction with KaBOOM! and the CarMax Foundation.
