Keeping up with your new year fitness goals

Keeping up with your new year fitness goals
Here are a few tips for those first-time gym-goers or those getting back into it after a while...

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - One of the most common new years resolutions is to get fit and healthy. However, it can be hard to keep up with your goals with a busy schedule.

There are a few things you should keep in mind while trying to change your lifestyle to becoming healthy and fit:

  • Have a realistic goal set: You can’t expect to reach your goal overnight. You’ll need to set milestones for yourself and take it slow and steady. You should adapt your lifestyle around your goal. If you don’t normally workout, and you’re just starting out, don’t over do it. Start out with two to three times a week and work your way up
  • Have a regular workout schedule:  Write your workout time down on your calendar or somewhere that you’ll check often. Or even sign up for a fitness class or marathon beforehand. If you have already committed to working out at a specific time, you will hold yourself accountable and are less likely to cancel.
  • Enjoy your workout and switch it up: Have fun with your workout! Experiment with different equipment, take a few dance classes, spin or yoga classes to figure out what workout best suits you. If you find a fun workout then you’ll continue your journey to your goal.
  • Change your mindset: Do it for yourself. People who workout just to see results on the outside in the mirror rarely stick with their workout program. But if you have fun and truly enjoy becoming an overall healthier person, you’ll more than likely reach your fitness goal and keep with it in the long run.
