WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Children learned lessons about giving Monday night, and they got some help from one of the Christmas season’s most charitable figures.

Santa Claus made an appearance at the 15th annual Make a Child Smile celebration held at Murrayville Elementary School. Kids received gifts and were able to ask Santa for what they wanted Christmas Day at the event put on by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.

Alyson Lanier's family donated gifts to Make a Child Smile.

"We have sort of a rule we live by: Be the change you wish to see in the world," Lanier said. "We have a young daughter that's pretty privileged so we feel it's a good way to show her that not everybody gets the same privilege. When we have, we give."

The sheriff's office said 75 children received gifts of all kinds.

Santa arrived on an NHC Fire Rescue Department truck and read The Night Before Christmas to the kids.
