CHAPEL HILL, NC (WECT) - North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams had high praise for his former assistant and current UNCW head coach C.B. McGrath.
“C.B. McGrath is one of my favorite people in the world,” Williams said after the Tar Heels’ 97-69 win over UNCW on Wednesday night. “He’s like a son to me, and I love him to death.”
McGrath played at Kansas for Williams and was an assistant under Williams at Kansas and Carolina before taking the UNCW job in April 2017.
McGrath had hoped Wednesday’s game against North Carolina would be just about basketball.
“It just felt like a basketball game to me, which I was surprised by,” McGrath said of coaching against North Carolina. “Just having all the questions leading up to the game, but when it started, I felt like I had my team prepared.”
“He didn’t mention it at all,” Seahawks junior Jeantal Cylla said of McGrath’s return to Chapel Hill. “He had been here for a long time and he’s familiar with a lot of their plays and in that aspect, he talked about it. But it wasn’t a homecoming for him or (assistant coach Jackie Manuel). We just approached it like a regular game.”
During his postgame news conference, Williams spoke about the difficulties McGrath has had since taking over the UNCW program.
“But he’s the only guy that has fewer home game than we do,” said Williams. “At his level, he has to play a lot of games to get money. He has to play a lot of games to get a schedule. He only has 14 home games.”
