Tar Heels hammer Seahawks in McGrath’s return to UNC
CHAPEL HILL, NC (WECT) - An early second half surge help North Carolina pull away from UNCW for a 97-69 men’s basketball victory Wednesday night.
The visiting Seahawks trailed by nine at halftime, but an 18-6 surge to begin the second half put the Tar Heels up 62-41. UNC led by as many as 34 in the second half.
“The second half was pretty ugly, but I was proud of our guys,” said UNCW head coach C.B. McGrath. “We competed in the first half and then a couple things didn’t go our way early in the second half and we got down on ourselves and just never recovered.”
Jeantal Cylla scored a team-high 16 points for UNCW (4-6) and Jay Estime added 12.
Seahawks standout Devontae Cacok was limited by foul trouble and finished with six points and six rebounds.
Cam Johnson scored a game-high 21 points for the Heels (7-2), who had four players in double-figure scoring.
“We were more active, we sweated more," said UNC head coach Roy Williams. "We were better in the second half, we had more effort and our traps helped us a little bit too. But we were better, yeah.”
Carolina won the rebound battle 50-36 and benefited from 25 Seahawks turnovers.
UNCW head coach C.B. McGrath played at Kansas for coach Roy Williams, who added McGrath to his coaching staff at UNC. McGrath was an assistant under Williams at Carolina for 18 seasons before taking the UNCW job in April 2017.
“(C.B.) is one of my favorite people in the world,” said William. He’s like a son to me. I love him to death."
