CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - If you have been to the boardwalk between March and September in Carolina Beach, chances are you have lined up around the block at Britt’s Donuts to get your hands on the sweet, sticky, warm gooey treat.
“What I love so much about it is its more like a family little donut shop than the competitors that are everywhere it feels more comfortable and more friendly,” said Hugh Reagan, who’s been coming to the shop for more than 20 years.
Britt’s Donuts is a family owned donut shop which started back in 1939 and is still a favorite with locals and tourists alike. The legendary donut has a recipe current owner Bobbie Nivens won’t dare speak of. He barely let our photographers in the kitchen as the longtime employees cut the donuts and, of course, fried them up to a bubbly golden brown, turning them with drumsticks before dipping them in delectable sugary glaze.
It’s a must-have mouthwatering treat you can only get a few months out of the year. The shop closes every year in October during the off-season.
Fun fact for Britt’s enthusiasts - Mr. Britt also owned a second donut shop in downtown Wilmington, which was open from 1939 to 1956.
