PLEASURE ISLAND, NC (WECT) - The Pleasure Island chapter of the worldwide Parrot Head Club does more than just party. They party with a purpose.
The first Jimmy Buffett fan club known as the “Parrot Head Club” was founded by Scott Nickerson in Atlanta 1989 according to the Netflix documentary, Parrot Heads.
Nickerson put an ad in the local newspaper to see if Jimmy Buffett fans would be interested in getting together on a regular basis.
The response he received was overwhelming and so began the Parrot Head Clubs.
Nickerson currently lives in Kure Beach. He moved to the area about 20 years ago after spending time at Duke Hospital for a brain tumor. He had family in Castle Hayne so he decided to move to Kure Beach full time once his brain tumor was gone.
The Pleasure Island chapter of the Parrot Head Club was founded by Dave Kendziora in 1998.
Kendziora describes a Parrot Head as “someone that enjoys each others company and wants to do good for the community and help out.”
Other than having a few drinks here and there and listening to Jimmy Buffett music, the Pleasure Island Parrot Head Club does a lot of volunteer work as well as environmental work.
One of their biggest volunteer events they do every year is giving toys to the NHRMC Children’s Hospital. One designated member even dresses as Santa with a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flip flops to deliver the toys.
They like to do beach sweeps as well to help out the environment. Kendziora said that was one of the first events they ever did as a club. It raised money for the Cape Fear River Watch and the Red Cross.
When the club first started in Pleasure Island in 1998, they had about 70 to 75 members. For the past 22 years, Kendziora says they have had about 100 at any one time.
