UNCW uses balanced attack to down East Carolina

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - UNCW’s Jeantal Cylla scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Seahawks beat in-state rival East Carolina 95-86 at Trask Coliseum on Tuesday night.

UNCW (4-4), which was playing its fourth game in five days, shot a blistering 57 percent from the field in the first half and led by 11 at halftime.

“Four games in five days isn’t easy, and we won three out of the four,” said UNCW coach C.B. McGrath. “I thought we came out with some energy and executed really well early.”

Seahawk freshman Kai Toews scored 16 points and handed out 10 assists for his second consecutive double-double.

Sophomore Ty Gadsden, making his second straight start for the Seahawks, scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, including three 3-pointers.

Juniors Ty Taylor and Jaylen Fornes scored 12 and 15 points, respectively, off the bench for UNCW.

“There has been a lot of transition and shuffling of the lineups with different guys playing with each other, and they really have responded to it,” said McGrath. “It was a team effort, and it was sure nice to get points off the bench."

ECU (4-4) was led by freshman Jayden Gardner, who scored a game-high 30 points.

The Seahawks play again Saturday when they host Davidson at 7 p.m.
