WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hurricane Florence pushed homelessness in the Cape Fear region into the spotlight.
The guest speaker at Monday's League of Women Voters of the Lower Cape Fear luncheon presented her vision of how to combat homelessness and keep people off the streets.
Maegan Zielinski is the homeless care director for the Cape Fear Council of Governments and she said preventing homelessness involves more than just finding housing.
"We want that political wield to be funding affordable housing and getting us funding so we can end and prevent homelessness," Zielinski said. "It's not as easy as just placing somebody into housing. We need support services, long-term services. There's a lot that goes into it."
Resources for organizations that help the homeless are stretched thin since the hurricane.
Zielinski said the best way for people to make a difference for the homeless community is to vote for political candidates who make affordable housing a priority.
