WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - New Hanover High School football coach Earl Smith announced he’s retiring as the Wildcats football coach effective Monday.

“I would like to thank the late James McAdams in helping bring me back to a school I truly love,” said Smith. “Also, would like to thank current principal Dr. Rob Morgan, and Athletic Director Keith Moore, who have been so supportive.”

Smith’s retirement comes three days after the Wildcats lost to Dudley, 42-21, in the second round of the 3AA state playoffs.

Smith was 44-13 during his four years at New Hanover, and helped lead the Wildcats to the 3AA state title in 2017. I

n his 32-year coaching career, Smith’s record was 281-99-1.
