Mitchell Slaggert: Meteoric rise from college student to famous face (”1on1 with Jon Evans” podcast)

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -On a November day in 2015, fate, in the form of Daniel Peddle, tapped Mitchell Slaggert on the shoulder. Slaggert was walking to his car after a class at Cape Fear Community College, and Peddle was in Wilmington for a screening of his movie Sunset Edge at the Cucalorus Film Festival. When the two passed on the street, Slaggert says he noticed Peddle’s chic clothing, thought it was an unusual sight in the Port City, and kept walking.

“About 20 steps later, he taps me on the shoulder and asked me if I wanted to be a model,” Slaggert remembers. “I was like ‘Thank you, but no thank you’. I could tell he (Peddle) was a bit nervous, which I found interesting. He said ‘Here’s my card, I’ll be expecting to hear from you’. I was like ‘alright, who says that?’ So I googled him, and he was the real deal.”

That chance meeting started a series of events that has made Mitchell Slaggert one of the most recognizable faces in the international fashion world. Within weeks, he had a contract with DNA, one of the most prestigious modeling agencies in New York City. The native of Fayetteville, Georgia was soon off to Italy for the first time to walk the runway and had landed a campaign to model Calvin Klein underwear. Slaggert admits to having some anxiety during those first photo shoots.

“It was a bit weird at first, because I’m walking around Brooklyn with clothes that grab attention,” he says. “Everybody’s looking at me while I’m getting my photos taken. Just unsettling a little bit. But eventually, you just got over it and rolled with it. The runway thing, the first thing I learned how to do in my life was walk so, I just walk a little bit faster. Really wasn’t any anxiety with that one.”

In addition to helping launch Slaggert’s modeling career, Peddle cast him as the lead in Moss, a film shot on the waters and swamps of Carolina Beach. As someone who says he grew up wanting to be ‘Steve Irwin”, Slaggert immersed himself in the role. The experience, which Slaggert talks about starting at 8:45 of the podcast, included a close-up meeting with a water moccasin.

“We were a little more than knee-deep in the water, and we had the camera strapped to the canoe,” Slaggert recalls. “I was just walking through the swamps and all of a sudden, I stepped on a stick and I see a water moccasin pop its head up. I jumped back out of the water and that thing just swims off. I was like ‘ooh, all right!’”

Slaggert has appeared in several other film and television productions, including Wish Upon with Ryan Phillipe. He is currently studying at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York to improve his talents.

“I’m spending just about every waking minute that I have free working on my training and diving in-depth into certain aspects of the trade,” Slaggert says about his acting. “There’s so much that goes into it. Tom Cruise still has stuff to learn because it’s all a self-discovery journey.”

The success has allowed Slaggert to share opportunities and experiences with his family. In the podcast Slaggert tells the story of introducing his sister to Rihanna at a nightclub (15:30), and of bringing his brother to New York City for the first time. But, just as quickly, his loved ones will be the first to keep the young star’s ego in check.

“If I ever get an inflated ego, I always tell them to get a running start and knock me out,” he says with a smile. “They can, and they will!”

Slaggert’s modeling career is just a few years old. But he’s experienced enough to have some words of advice for anyone wanting to give it a try.

“Best way I can phrase it is, if the shoe doesn’t fit don’t wear it,” he says. “Sometimes I will go into a casting, and there will be a bunch of skinny, long-haired skater-looking guys. I’ll look at the casting director and say ‘What am I doing here, I’m not going to get this job!’ Sometimes people take it personally when they don’t get those jobs, but that’s the not the case at all.”
