COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Two people were killed after a car crashed into a pond in the Brunswick community of Columbus County Thursday night.

According to the News Reporter, the crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. as the car rounded a curve on Pleasant Plains Church Road east of Harrelsonville Road.

Brunswick Fire Chief Greg Spivey tells the News Reporter that the car just missed pine trees between the road and the pond before splashing in the water upside down.

Firefighters discovered the bodies of two male occupants after pulling the car out of the water. Their identities have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Divers from Lake Waccamaw EMS and the sheriff’s office responded and were looking for a possible third victim, however, the search was called off around 11 p.m. after they failed to find anyone.
