If you're like me and like to know the how and why things work the way they do, you'll probably get lost in this website like I did--howstuffworks.com. General topics range anywhere from automotive to weapons--even toy weapons like water guns, with plenty of computer and internet related 'hows' to learn more about.
For example, how does the hard drive on your PC work--storing as much information as it does? The article on the site goes over the history of the hard disk and just what does goes on inside the disk without ruining your own. You can also read up on all those ports--SCSI or "scuzzy", USB, and serial--on the back of your CPU and what makes them different from each other.
What gets you on the internet to start with? Your connection to your server. Find out how different connections like modems (both cable and standard), DSL, and wireless web work. You can also find out what the future of the internet holds in the "future net" section.
For this week in geek, I'm Mark Avery.
