WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Last week I got into a polite debate with a guy who works at WECT - he wanted me to do a commentary on Sheriff Sid Causey's decision to retire.
In his view, the retirement announcement was a scandal motivated by politics. He believes that when a politician is elected to a term they should be legally obligated to fill out that term, with the only exception being death or impeachment.
I didn't agree and find it hard to blame the Sheriff. In my opinion, with the county's buy-out offer, his conditions of employment changed and all he is doing is looking at what's best for him and his family. What's wrong with that?
I've never met Sheriff Causey, but I think when he ran for re-election his intent was to fulfill his commitment to the residents of New Hanover County. Maybe this retirement opportunity was just too good to pass up.
So instead of doing that commentary a co-worker wanted me to do, I instead would like to congratulate Sheriff Causey on his years of public service and wish him well in his retirement.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Response from viewers:
As a former New Hanover County Sheriff's Deputy, I agree with your comment. I believe Sheriff Causey has more than completed the job he loves so much! He is a Great Man. He cares deeply for his fellow employees and their families. He has been a wonder-full Sheriff and friend to all. He will be missed ! Someone has big shoes to fill!!
I think its time for Mr. causey to retire, he has been in the law position for 39 years. I like him a lot, now its time to spend some time with his family.
Instead of allowing Sid to pick his own replacement, let the County Commissioners pick a replacement, anything other than allowing him to pick his own replacement The last two Democrat Sheriffs have left in the middle of there terms and chose there own replacement.Sorry but we see a pattern.Do your homework. This is not FAIR!
It takes a good person to speak the way you did. Not many people would have said what you said about Sheriff Causey. Instead, many would have simply agreed that it was a scandal and added in their own assumptions about why he retired. I agree, wish him well and let him enjoy his retirement. Whatever his reasons, I believe he left in a respective way.
Thank you for your support of Sheriff Causey's resignation. I whole-heartedly agree! It's not as if he just up and decided that he wants out of his obligation; the county made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
Sheriff Causey has done a great job in his position. I know several men and women who work for the sheriff's department, and they all do a fine job. Most of us have no idea what they go through on a daily basis, often putting their very lives on the line.
I have had the privilege of meeting Sheriff Causey on several occasions (non-official), and I wish him the best. Hopefully, he'll be able to enjoy a few years of retirement.
Amen! I believe he did a decent job. His people were very efficient in catching the person who broke to my home and assaulted my wife and I while robbing us. His men caught the individual in a very short time and the DA put him away where he belonged.
Thank you sheriff and enjoy your retirement.
