WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Earlier this week a Wilmington Police Officer was killed while he was responding as back up for another officer.
28-year-old Richard Matthews came to Wilmington in 2006 after working for the NYPD.
Sgt. Warren Kennedy spoke to Matthews just before he went on duty Tuesday.
"[He was] well liked - a joy to work with," said Kennedy. "[He was] always eager to help, always had a kind word for people. The folks who worked with him always knew you could count on him."
Matthews' family, who lives in Pennsylvania, said that the officer died doing what he loved to do. They say he was very proud to be a police officer.
Visitation for the fallen officer will take place Sunday evening at Port City Church. A funeral service will be Monday at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Wilmington.
Final services and burial will be conducted in Bethlehem, PA.
