WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Last week a Wilmington couple was found dead in their home after residents called police to report they hadn't seen their neighbors in weeks.

Wilmington Police detectives found the bodies of Laura Gallagher, 59, and her husband James Gallagher, 70 in their home on 424 Westridge Court.

Search warrant affidavits filed with the New Hanover County Court Clerk's Office say James was found in the living room surrounded by blood stained walls.  Laura was found in a bedroom clutching a prescription bag. Both showed multiple wounds.

In all, 80 items were collected from the crime scene including at least 3 kitchen knives covered in blood and a hammer.

Detectives found broken glass, medicine bottles, and bloody items throughout the house.

According to investigators, evidence collected in the bathroom led them to believe Laura's son, Gerard Edward Altman, was the accused killer.

Altman was taken into custody Feb. 5 at the Reserves at Forest Hills apartment complex on Darlington Avenue in Wilmington.

He is charged with two counts of first degree murder and is expected to be in court Feb. 26.
