WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Repairs to the only bridge going to and from Wrightsville Beach is taking a little longer than expected.
Crews will continue to work on the drawbridge March 2, 3, and 4 from 11:30 PM until 5:00 AM.
Inspectors say aquatic worms have eaten away at some of the timber pilings under the bridge, and they have to stop traffic to fix the problem.
According to the Department of Transportation, the bridge is safe to use for the time being.
"If the bridge wasn't safe to be traveled upon we wouldn't have it open and have people driving across it," said DOT Bridge Maintenance Engineer Amanda Glynn.
Sea Tow will offer a free boat service to residents who need to be taken across the water while construction is taking place on the bridge.
Authorities say the drawbridge can be put down in 20 minutes for emergency situations. They also say an ambulance will be on the island while crews are working on the bridge.
Anyone who needs a ride during the scheduled bridge repairs should contact Sea Tow at 452-3798 in advance, if possible.
