WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -- With a cue from the director, the cast of Techmoja Theatre and Dance Company's production of Dreamgirls rehearses one of the hit show's upbeat numbers.
The show has a big cast, but the focus on Deena, Effie and Lorrell.
"This show is loosely based on the life of the Supremes," said actress Tyanna West. "It's about three young ladies who are in a music group together, and they get famous. And it just talks about the ups and downs that occur during their rise to stardom."
The thrill of fame and the pain of disappointment are all set to a stirring score of music, which became wildly popular with the release of the film version of Dreamgirls in 2006.
"The [stage] musical is a bit more detailed, and there's a lot of very important stuff I think is left out of the movie," said West. "So I think whoever comes to see this show is just gonna love it."
"People really need to see the piece the way it was before it was made into a film, because Hollywood robs you of a lot of things," said director Kevin Green. "And I think that the show itself offers a lot more than the movie."
"[It has] love, hate, gospel, dancing, so you'll come out of here feeling good no matter what happens," added actor Tracy Byrd. "We're gonna surprise Wilmington with this."
