WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Environmental Protection Agency wants to get really serious about clean air. The agency is considering issuing a tax on those emitting high levels of greenhouse gases.
I can hear environmentalists applauding, but hold on. The EPA is not going after industry and transportation. Instead they want to tax the cows! Seriously the cows!
You and I don't see cows as an environmental hazard? Well - cows release gas and they do it in the same way we do.
The numbers haven't been worked out, but early predictions call for a farmer to be taxed $175 for each dairy cow he has, and about half that for beef cattle.
I didn't know that dairy cows emit more gas - but apparently they do. Perhaps it's their diet.
Now I am all about being a better environmental citizen, but make no mistake this is not about the environment.
This is about government taxing anything it can. And I think it goes without saying, this idea stinks.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at yourturn@wect.com.
